This is the time of year the pundits tell us what’s coming for the year ahead, what styles will be in, where the economy is headed, what the hit summer movie will be. I claim no ability to see what’s coming tomorrow. But it’s fun to take stock of where we are and where we’re headed. So I’m looking at 2018 as a fruit salad. Here goes:

What’s in: your tax advisor. With the new tax bill signed into law at the end of 2017, tax advisors are in hot demand as people try to figure out how it will affect them and if they should change anything.

What’s out: the telegram. Belgium, one of the last countries still using telegrams stopped service at the end of 2017. Britain, where the telegram was first used in 1830, India, and the United States all stopped using telegrams in the last 15 years.

New trend:  Snow in the Sahara Desert. Well, maybe this isn’t a trend but it’s pretty amazing. It actually snowed over a foot in January 2018. The camels reportedly weren’t too happy.

Old trend:  Retro clothing styles are back. This works for those of us who never managed to pass on those old clothes to charity. You can pull these now trendy clothes from the 1970’s and 80’s out of the closet and if they don’t fit, sell them for a bunch on the internet.

Is the market headed up, down, or sideways? Yes. It will do some of each of those things. For more, ask your financial advisor and position your portfolio to manage all market environments.

And now for the cherry on top:  Chocolate is still good for you. Maybe I’ll have to wrap that into my resolutions for the year.
